How much does fake conferences make each year? The cost of setting up a web site, send emails to academics to invite them to submit articles (you usually have to pay to publish and the “peer review” … well, 😬) or do something else, and then cash in on the fees people pay must be quite rewarding.

I’m not an active researcher and I still get 10-30 invitations per week. This is a part of the latest one:

It is my pleasure to invite you as a Distinguished Speaker at International Conference on Materials Science and Advanced Composite Materials

Anyone who have done the slightest background check before making an invitation like this would realize that I have zero knowledge of this subject. OK, I took a materials course some 40 years ago … “distinguished speaker” bahahahahahaha.

However, this is better than usual, it’s normally says something like this

“Based on your research records we would like to invite you as the keynote speaker at the Most Famous Conference in Geoscience” another area of which I have zero knowledge and have done no research whatsoever.

There has to be a lot of money in creating fake conferences !!!!
